As an apprentice, Slania was permitted to engrave only the head of the hammer, under the supervision of Marian Romuald Polak, the head engraver at the PWPW. (Polska Wytwórnia Papierów Wartoœciowych = Polish Security Printing Works). Polak was a somewhat overrated engraver and designer. Slania soon outclassed his teacher. Although Slania had played only a small part in the making of this stamp, it is considered to be his first.
